Title
Probable Roman Ear Scoop or Probe
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy object, probably a Roman ear scoop or associated probe. The object consists of a two-ended implement, with one end comprising a pyriform-shaped flat disc and the other a broken sub-oval smaller scoop or suspension loop. The sub-oval shaft in between these terminals is decorated at least halfway with simple incised rings around its circumference and a more closely set series of three rings directly below the small scoop or suspension loop. The larger end would have been used as either a medical probe or ear scoop and was probably originally cupped slightly for this purpose. It measures 46.8 mm long, 8.8 mm wide at scoop-end and 7.1 mm wide at smaller terminal. The middle shaft is approximately 8 mm thick. It weighs 1.9 grams. The object is of an even dark green patina.
