Summary[edit]

Description
English: Merrill Denison wrote the book 'Canada's First Bank' - the history of the Bank of Montreal. In a quote from Mary Savigny's book- Bon Echo - The Denison Years, Mary shared this passage from Merrill in a letter to her congratulating Mary and John on the birth of their second son, John Merrill Savigny:

'Passing through Montreal last week there was dropped in my lap in a pleasant thirty minute interview the best assignment yet, no less than a commission to undertake the history of the Bank of Montreal. All I've ever known about banking and finance has been tinged with the red of over-draughts, or is it drafts.'
Merrill started researching the book in 1955 and twelve years later the 471 page book was completed. He said he had been asked, "How much is this going to cost?" and had replied, 'It's like buying a yacht. If you have to ask, you can't afford it."
