Description
English: This photo shows XF1 (CUV 51C) a preserved Daimler Fleetline rear-engined bus with Park Royal 72-seater bodywork taken outside North Weald Station. It was one of eight such vehicles which entered service in September 1965 on route 424 (East Grinstead - Reigate via Copthorne and Horley), they being based at the former East Grinstead bus garage (TQ3838). Subsequently, these Daimler Fleetlines were transferred to north London to work on routes 67 (Wood Green - Aldgate) and 271 (Highgate Village - Moorgate), they being swapped with eight Leyland Atlantean buses, also with Park Royal 72-seater bodywork. These vehicles were bought by London Transport to test the feasibility of rear-engined buses compared with the ubiquitous Routemaster buses then in service. Of interest is that these Daimler Fleetlines with their front entrances were crew-worked in peak hours, but worked only by the driver in off-peak with the upper deck closed off to passengers. This was because in the mid-1960s, one-man working of double-deck buses was not permitted at that time, although that was changed in the late 1960s.
This vehicle is in the green and yellow livery of London Country Bus Services Ltd which took over from the London Transport Country Area on the 1st January 1970. Its logo can be seen on the front of the vehicle above the registration number plate.
