a vet takes a blood sample from a sedated prairie dog

A veterinarian draws blood from a sedated prairie dog. In 2013, prairie dogs in the park were vaccinated against plague, a disease that can wipe out whole prairie dog towns. The disease also affects other rodents, humans, dogs, cats, ferrets, and other carnivores. Park biologists use several management techniques to prevent plague in the park.
