Works copyrighted before 1964 had to have the copyright renewed sometime in the 28th year. If the copyright was not renewed the work is in the public domain. It is best to search 6 months before and after the required year. Some magazines are published the month before the cover date and some registrations may be delayed for a few months. This 1924 issue of Practical Electrics would have to be renewed in 1951. Online page scans of the Catalog of Copyright Entries, published by the US Copyright Office can be found here. http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/cce/ The search of the Renewals for Periodicals for 1950, 1951 and 1952 show no renewal entries for Practical Electrics. The magazine was renamed The Experimenter in 1924 and the last issue was in February 1926. The Experimenter Publishing was declared bankrupt in 1929 and the assets were acquired by Radio-Science Publications. Radio-Science ceased operations in 1931 and the assets were acquired by Teck Publishing. Ziff-Davis Publishing acquired the assets of Teck in 1938. (The Great Depression was hard on magazine publishers.) Ziff-Davis did not make a practice of renewing the copyrights of magazines they created and they did not renew this one. The copyright on the magazine was not renewed and it is in the public domain. |
