Summary[edit]
DescriptionPraça de Dom Pedro IV (3901869044).jpg |
A 23 m tall white marble pillar topped with a bronze statue of Pedro IV was erected on the Praça de Dom Pedro IV square in the heart of Lisboa in 1870. In 1807, when the royal family fled from Napoleonic troops, the son of King Joao VI stayed in Brazil. He remained there after his father returned to Lisbon. In 1822 he became Pedro I, the first emperor of Brazil, which was henceforth an independent country. For a brief time at the end of his life he was also the king of Portugal, but here he is known as Dom Pedro IV. |
