Summary
[edit]DescriptionPower shade system, August 2011 (6052976812).jpg |
A birds-eye view of the solar shade shows several of the 72 panels that absorb sunlight to produce two kilowatts of power daily in the sun-baked climate of Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti. Photo by Rich Bartell, U.S. Army Africa Public Affairs Maj. Tim Franklin of U.S. Army Africa and Steve Tucker of U.S. Army Natick Research, Development and Engineering Center in Massachusetts recently visited the site of the solar shade as part of a limited military user assessment of the system. Additionally, they trained Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa troops to assemble, disassemble and maintain the solar shade that has been producing useable and eco-friendly energy for the past year with little or no maintenance.
