Description

Canal Street, New Orleans. Postcard showing the 1895 snow.

Snow is rare in New Orleans, with a light dusting of flakes which quickly melt being a remarkable event occuring perhaps once a generation. The St. Valentine's Day storm of 1895 deposited 8 inches of snow on the Crescent City. While this would be unremarkable in most Northern cities, as New Orleans was unprepared for snow and inexperienced in its removal, traffic in the Southern metropolis was paralized.

The view is from the French Quarter side of the 700 block of Canal, looking out and up to the intersection of Carondelet. Rows of stranded trams are lined on the neutral ground.
The only comparable snow in New Orleans history was in 1963.
