Title |
Post Medieval Spoon |
||
Description |
English: A pewter spoon with a trifid (tri-lobed) handle and oval bowl, 66mm long, 47mm wide and 14mm in depth. The trifid end of the handle is decorated with a shell-like top, below which is a heart containing the initials L and F, and a flower design. The initials have been stamped onto the already cast object, suggesting that the spoon itself was ready-made and the initials added on, perhaps to celebrate a marriage. Below the heart is an urn, from which protrudes foliage which continues up around the heart. Another flower design is located below this. The stem of the spoon is flat with chamfered edges, forming a sub-rectangular profile. It tapers to a rat-tail support on the back of the bowl which stretches for just under half the bowl's length. On the back of the stem is a crowned floral design, which may be a maker's mark. The spoon is complete and well-preserved, other than a slight bend in the handle. A similar spoon decorated with a heart containing initials has been found in Stainmore, Cumbria (see find LVPL72). |
