Title
Post Medieval powder flask cap (top, profile and base)
Description
English: The object is a sub-oval framed buckle with an off-set strap bar, made from cast copper alloy. The loop of the frame is oval in section and it is thicker than it is wide, the thickness of the loop at the apex is 5.19mm, whereas the width, when viewed in plan, of the loop is 3.19mm. The loop tapers in width and thickness towards the strap bar. The strap bar is off-set and is oval in section. The surface of the frame and particularly the strap bar is heavily abraded and corroded. There are traces of a dark grey/green patina. The pin is missing. The frame measures 21.89mm wide from the strap bar to the apex of the loop, and 30.29mm long. It weighs 3.6g. Egan and Pritchard (2002 Dress Accessories Boydell Press) illustrate similar buckles, Nos. 303 to 305, which dates to the mid 12th to mid 14th century. The nature of the corrosion and the thickness of the loop compared to the width on the recorded example differentiate it from the Egan and Pritchard examples and may suggest a later date, perhaps up to the 15th century.
