Post Medieval copper alloy pipe tamper
Description
English: A Post-Medieval complete copper alloy pipe tamper or tuning hammer. The handle of the hammer expands slightly towards the end to form a wider surface suitable for tamping. c.10mm above the end are two raised collars. The other end takes the form of a simple hammer head. Several similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database including several examples of this type of tamper are recorded on the database, including SF-D1CBA3, LANCUM-1B7A36, SUSS-8CAED1, SUR-3B28F4, SUR-013852 and BERK-AEB571. Some small hammers may also have been used for tuning harpsichords and pianos, for example PAS record LANCUM-0C7641. It is likely to be of 17th to 19th century date.
