Title
Post Medieval: Bodkin Treasure
Description
English: Treasure Case 2011-T393: Specialist Report
Silver bodkin or head dress pin dated to the post medieval period.
Date: Post Medieval (1550-1650 AD)
Finder:
Date of discovery: 2011
Circumstances of discovery: While searching with a metal detector

Description
The bodkin or silver dress-pin is incomplete consisting solely of the head and upper shaft; the lower shaft, including the pointed tip is lost due to an old break. The shaft is rectangular in section with bevelled (slightly faceted) edges on both sides. It tapers from a rounded tip which has a small bowl / ear-scoop terminal to the break on the lower edge. Below the ear scoop is a rectangular panel which is decorated with a number of incised lines and a single pierced hole (diameter: 1.5mm). This decoration is echoed (exactly the same) on the reverse face. The decoration continues below the pierced hole and onto the upper shaft which is also pierced with single rectangular slot. All tool / file marks have been polished away and the metal has a silver surface with small areas of black patinated surface present

Dimensions
Length; 32.8mm, width; 5.6mm width, 1.8mm thickness across ear-scoop, 1.9mm across body of bodkin. Weight: 1.83 grams

Discussion and Dating
Large numbers of these have been reported through the Treasure Act (1996) all being dated period 1500 - 1650 (for examples see Treasure Annual Report 2005/6; pages 135-137 cat no's: 575-602). A complete example similar to this can be seen from Buckingham, Buckinghamshire; 2006-T462 (ibid 135 ref 575). There is some debate over function with some being suggested as head dress pins or dress-pins whilst others associated with needlework and lace making. The examples of bodkins with ear-scoops are one of the most common sub-types.

Statement
The artefact (bodkin) contains a minimum of 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
