Title |
Post-Medieval Head-dress Pin |
||
Description |
English: A silver head-dress pin, complete but twisted. The shaft is of flattened quadrangular section tapering to a point. The pin has an ear scoop at one end above a pierced loop. Below this the pin is waisted before a short decorated length with a rectangular opening below. This decorative section is divided into two with a chevron above and a quatrefoil with four calyx points below. The etched decoration continues below the opening. On both sides, there is the same quatrefoil motif with two horizontal lines above and below. Below this is a section of foliate ornament of zigzag design culminating in the owner's initials AH. On the other side, the similar ornament culminates in a stamped maker's mark, G over W. This type of head-dress pin (sometimes referred to as a bodkin) dates to the seventeenth century. A similar example is in the collections of Norfolk Museums (Margeson 1993, 9, Plate III). |
