Title
Possible Roman toilet article, reverse
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy object, possibly a fragment of an ear-scoop. The object terminates in a suspension loop which is perpendicular to the shaft. This loop is 6.0mm in width and 4.2mm in thickness. The object tapers to a shaft 1.5mm in thickness. Between the suspension loop and the shaft of the implement is an irregular plate. The obverse field of this plate is decorated with punched dots: six central, longitudinal dots and a further twelve following the indented contours of the plate, seven to the right and five to the left. The shaft features small nicks on its edges on the obverse. On the reverse the field features an incised saltire cross. There are also two incised lines extending diagonally into the field from the shaft junction. The edges of the shaft appear to be bevelled on the reverse. The shaft has received an old break 8.9mm below the plate. This break renders identification impossible, although it could be a toilet spoon, and in particular an ear-scoop. Probably Roman in date.
