Summary[edit]

Description
English: This photograph depicts a young woman seated wearing a lace embroidered dress. It is possible that this woman is American shipowner, Captain Edward Robert Sterling's daughter Dorothy (or Dorathy) H Sterling. There is very little information available about Sterling's third child, though the 1910 United States Federal Census states that she was born in 1896 in Massachusetts.

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio Collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 72-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
