The University of Washington opened on November 4, 1861, as the Territorial University of Washington on a 10 acre site in Seattle donated by Arthur and Mary Denny, Edward Lander, and Charlie and Mary Terry, about where the Fairmont Olympic Hotel stands today. In 1895 the growing university relocated to the current campus north of downtown. This portrait of Alumni from the first class of students of the Territorial University was taken as part of elaborate semi-centennial celebrations held from November 3-8, 1911. Individuals are identified on a card included with the photograph as: Back row, left to right: Clarence B. Bagley, 1843-1932; Margaret Lenora "Nora" Denny, 1847-1915; Orion O. Denny, 1853-1916; Mrs. Orion O. (Helen V. Stewart Cole) Denny, 1869-1922; George W. Harris, 1847-1914. Center row left to right: Mrs. Clarence (Alice Mercer) Bagley, 1849-1926; Rolland Hershel Denny, 1851-1939; Mrs. Gardner K (Sarah Amelia Bonney) Kellogg, 1848-1926; Dillis Burgess Ward, 1838-1922. Front row, left to right: Unidentified; Mrs. Oliver C. (Mary Emeline Bonney) Shorey, 1844-1934; Margaret Lenora Denny, 1847-1915; Mrs. David (Susannah Mercer) Graham, 1843-1942; Unidentified.
