English: Mars Gate-Porte de Mars, Reims, France.
The oldest monument in Reims, the Porte de Mars (Mars Gate, so called from a temple to Mars in the neighbourhood), a triumphal arch 33 m in length by 13 in height, consists of three archways flanked by columns. The Mars Gate was one of 4 Roman gates to the city walls, which were restored at the time of the Norman Invasion of northern France in the 9th century.

Het oudste monument in Reims is de Porte de Mars, een triomfboog van 33 m breed en 13 m hoog. De Porte de Mars is een van de Romeinse toegangspoorten to de stad, die gerestaureerd werden tijdens de invallen van d eVikings in de negende eeuw.
Français : La porte de Mars (ou porte Mars) date du IIIe siècle, ce qui fait d'elle le plus ancien monument de Reims. Elle tient son nom de la proximité d'un temple dédié à Mars, le dieu romain de la guerre.
C'est un arc de triomphe de 33 mètres de long (le plus long du monde romain) pour 13 mètres de haut, constitué de 3 arches bordées de colonnes. L'intrados des voûtes, aujourd'hui très dégradé, offre une rare et intéressante représentation d'une moissonneuse gauloise. |
