al members of the Chemical Society, who had been vice-con-sul in Caldera, Chili, and Professor of Chem-istry at St. Marys Hospital and in the Lon-don Institution. He contributed to scien-tific publications numerous papers on vari-ous branches of chemistry, especially ontopics relating to the mineralogy and metallurgy of South America. The death is reported of Professor Hun-ker, mineralogist and paleontologist, of Mar-burg. Sir Frederick Palgrave Barlee, whodied in Trinidad last summer while servingas governor pro tcm. of the island, had doneconsiderable official service to geographicaland archaeological exploration. As ColonialSecretary of Western Australia, he gave en-couragement to Mr. John Forrests explorations, and had the great Lake Barlcc named after him. As Lieutenant-Governor of British Honduras, he extended official supportin aid of Mr. H. Fowlers journey across theunexplored part of the colony, and also en-couraged and assisted the explorations of Dr. Le Plongeoa in Yucatan.

THE great importance of a winter sanitarium for patients suffering from or threatened with consumption and other allied diseases has long been recognized and acted upon in Europe. The favorite resort of this description is the valley of Davos, in the Engadine, in Switzerland, where, at an elevation of five thousand four hundred feet above sea-level, the patients enjoy, during the winter months, in asheltered position, brilliant sunshine, and an early equable sun-temperature from sunrise to sunset. Dr. Hermann Weber, one of the highest authorities in Europe onchest-diseases, thus summarizes the physiological effects of the climateof Davos : 1.
