English: The nuclear-powered submarine U.S.S. George Washington fires a second POLARIS missile to its target. Extended above the surface to the right is a temporary radio antenna tower, used to receive telemetered data from the test missile. Neither the antenna nor the smoke marker tcould be used in operational launchings.
On July 20, 1960, U.S.S. George Washington, first of the fleet ballistic missile submarines, was commissioned December 30,1959, and, after preliminary tests with inert models, successfully performed flight tests of the prototype tactical POLARIS missile, off Cape Canaveral, Fla. |
