Summary[edit]
DescriptionPoland Beskid Niski Krzywa Banica Monument Of Polish 2nd War Pilots.jpg |
English: Poland, Beskid Niski, Krzywa, Banica - Monument to Polish pilots shot down during mission of bringing supplies to Warsaw Uprising. Formerly it was believed the aircraft was a "Liberator B-24"; however, recent excavation at the Banica crash site which took place in September 2006 resulted in the identification of the aircraft as Halifax not Liberator. Parts were sent for identification to the RAF Museum in Hendon, London by the excavation team.
The excavation was led by Professor Krzysztof Wielgus of Cracow Polytechnik and Polish Aviation Museum in Cracow and it is believed that the remains belong to Halifax JP 295 from Polish Special Duties Flight 1586 (formerly Squadron 301), captained by Fl/Lt Franciszek Omylak. This Halifax went missing during an operation during the Warsaw Uprising in August 1944 in which supplies were flown from Brindisi in Italy to Warsaw to assist the Home Army. The remains of the Halifax crew were buried in the cemetery in Krzywa after the crash, but in 1980 two bodies were removed from their graves erroneously and buried in Rakowice Cemetery, Cracow. Tragically they were buried under the names of crew members of a Liberator aircraft which crashed at Olszyny (more than 30 km away from Banicy) 10 days earlier. It is planned that the names of the seven crew members of the Halifax will be placed on this monument in recognition of their bravery.See the following websites for more information: http://www.beskid-niski.pl/index.php?pos=/tematy/banica http://www.aircrewremembrancesociety.com/banicapolishmemorial.html Deutsch: Gedenkstein für die polnische Besatzung eines britischen Handley Page Halifax-Bombers (RAF JP-295), der am 28.
