Description
English: A long-dormant volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula erupted on March 24, 2017, with a surprise explosion that sent an ash plume 5,000 – 6,000 m (16,404 to 19,685 feet) into the atmosphere. Since the first eruption, ash has continued to stream from the volcano, creating a stream blowing more than 800 km (497 mi) southward.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image of Kambalny Volcano and its plume on March 26, 2017, two days after the initial eruption. A dark stain is visible covering the snow on the east, south, and west sides of the volcano.

An alert from the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team warned of sporadic ash plumes rising up to 8 kilometers (26,200 feet) above sea level. The activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft in the region, the group said.
