Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The second main image in John Brown by W. E. B. Du Bois, full page as originally scanned.

"A map of Harper's Ferry, showing points figuring in the raid."

It shows Harper's Ferry (formerly in Virginia, now in West Virginia), lying at the internal point where the Shenandoah River meets the Potomac River. To the north of the rivers are the "Maryland Heights" in Maryland; to the south are the "Loudoun Heights" in Virginia, two sections of mountain ridges. There is an arrow in the southern part of the map pointing southwest labeled "To the Great Black Way." Six locations are marked.

1. Kennedy Farm: Off the map, to the north 2. School-house: On the northern edge of the Potomac, across the river from the town. 3. Armory: On the tip of Harper's Ferry, between the Arsenal and Engine-house. 4. Arsenal: On the tip of Harper's Ferry, to the east of the Armory, adjacent to a railroad that runs on the southern edge of town and crosses the Potomac river, immediately next to the start of that railroad's bridge. 5. Engine-house: On the tip of Harper's Ferry, to the west of the Armory, on the Potomoac's southern shore.

6. Rifle-works: On the southern edge of Harper's Ferry, in a forested area, adjacent to the railroad. The furthest west point marked.
