Description
English: An engraved plate in the Macklin Bible (Cadell & Davies edition of the Apocrypha) after a specially-commissioned painting by Philippe De Loutherbourg. Photographed from the Bowyer bible, Bolton, England. 26.3220. The Fraud of Bel's Priests Detected. Daniel standing beside the King, holding his hand out towards the foot of a statue of Bel, and the baskets and plates empty of food placed before it (History of Bel & the Dragon, v.19). 1816. Inscriptions: Lettered below image with title, text reference, production detail: "P. J. De Loutherbourg R.A. Pinxt.", "I. Landseer sculp. Engraver to the King" and publication line: "London, Published Feby. 20 1816, by T. Cadell & W. Davies Strand". Print made by John Landseer. Dimensions: Height: 490 millimetres; width: 385 millimetres.
