anicles,4-8 together, pink or red, irregular in shape, and with exsertedstamens. The roots of the puriri never penetrate deeply intothe ground, but lie near the surface, so that the tree is easilyblown over in a gale of wind. It is endemic in New Zealand,and is restricted to the northern part of the North Island. Itis easily cultivated, and flowers more or less all the yearround. Genus Teucridium. Shrubs, stem 4-angled, slender. Leaves opposite, entire. Flowers solitary,axillary. Corolla 2-lipped ; stamens exserted. Ovary 4-lobed, 2-celled. Fruit asmall, rough, 4-lobed nut, consisting of 4 1-seeded acheiies. (Name in allusionto its resemblance to Teucritcm, the Wood-sage or Germander). 1 sp. THE VERBENA FAMILY 351 Teucridium parvifolium (The Small-leaved Teucridium). A shrub, 2ft.-5ft. in height, forming close thickets ; branches and leavesslightly hairy. Leaves roundish or oval, ^in. long. Calyx bell-shaped, with 5sharp teeth. Corolla hairy, bell-shaped, ^in.-Jin. long. Fl. Dec.-Jan.

CahTc 4-5-parted•Corolla leathery, small, 4-5-lobed. Stamens 4, short. Ovary-i-celled. Fruit an 352 PLANTS OP NEW ZEALAND oval nut, 1-celled, 1-seeded. Seed a large embryo, cotyledons very broad andthick. (Name in memory of a celebrated Oriental physician). 1 sp. Avicennia officinalis (The Mangrove). A tree, with spreading branches, growing in salt creeks and estuaries.Leaves 2in.-3in. long, oblong, obtuse, leathery. Flower-panicles yellowish-brown, corolla J in. long. North Island : as far south as Thames River. Fl.May-June. Maori name, Manmva. (Forster originally named this plant .4.resinifera, from the belief that the gum chewed by the natives came from thissource. This gum was perhaps kauri-gum. Lindley, in his VegetableKingdom, when speaking of the jMangrove, improves upon Forsters statementthus:
