Image Caption at source: When inner planets are between Earth and Sun they are said to be at inferior conjunction. When on the far side of the Sun they are at superior conjunction. Sometimes at inferior conjunction the planes of the orbits align, and Mercury and Venus are seen as dark dots on the face of the Sun as they pass in transit.
