Plan of Livingstonia Institiution, Malawi, ca. 1894-1904
Image of a sketch plan of the Livingstonia Institution, the mission station established on the shores of Lake Nyasa and named after the pioneering missionary David Livingstone. The plan is drawn to scale and shows the intended locations of buildings including, educational establishments, churches, hospitals, houses and power supply.; This belongs to a series of Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee lantern slides relating to Dr Robert Laws (1851-1934) the Scottish Missionary. In 1875, inspired by David Livingstone (1813-1873), Laws travelled to Malawi and was involved in the foundation of the mission station of Livingstonia on the shores of Lake Nyasa. During the succeeding 50 years he also established a network of hundreds of schools. In 1908 Laws was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland.
