Title
Pin, silver, balloon headed
Description
English: A middle Anglo-Saxon silver pin head, now damaged, its shaft now truncated to a length of 6.4mm. The head is balloon-shaped (biconical with a median band) and separated from the shaft by a small collar. Its surface is covered with small tooling facets. This pin is of a type known to have been in use in the Middle Saxon period, c. AD 700-900.

Balloon-headed pins and related types were common finds on sites such as Whitby Abbey, Yorks. which was abandoned following Viking raids during the late 860s (Peers and Radford, 1943, Fig. 14).
