His father had been estab-lished first at Greytown, on the borders of Zululand,then an outpost of South African civilization. Thereyoung Louis was born, eighth child and third son ofhis parents, whose family numbered thirteen. Hisfather, Louis the elder, was a genial, free-handed man,who now and again got into money troubles throughbacking his friends. To meet a heavy obligation ofthis kind, he had to sell his farm and migrate overthe border into the Orange Free State, where, nearVrede, he settled down again to ostrich farming. It was a wild country, and big game was plentiful.The boy learned early to ride and shoot straight, andto be at home on the veld, a knowledge invaluableto the future general.
