Thence he passed to BalliolCollege, Oxford, and, after a brilliant University careerwas elected Fellow of All Souls College in 1883. Hisdistinctions were not only in the Schools. He wasPresident of the Union and acquired some fame asa debater, as well as some social notoriety as a person-age. It is said that there was an Oxford parody of theverses which he addressed to the beautiful Miss MaryLeiter, whom he afterwards married ; and that two linesof it ran— My name is Nathaniel Curzon, Mary !Im a very superior person, Mary! No doubt undergraduate humour is of an irrespon-sible and effervescent kind ; but the fact remains thatthe future Viceroy had perhaps more than his fairshare of the Oxford manner, and he took himselfvery seriously.
