Description

A monument for building of the channel at Niskakoski Rapids of River Pielinen (Niskakoski, Pielisjoki, Joensuu, Finland). The Pielisjoki channel was finished in 1879. At that time Finland was not yet an independent state but an autonomic part of Russia. The statue shows the Russian two-headed eagle and the pedestal contains the name of Alexander II. During his administration Finland's economy flourished which made Alexander very popular and admired in Finland.
