Used references: This saprophytic fungus fruits in most cases on rotten wood of Nothofagus (N. pumilo, N. betuloides, N. antacrtica) but its occurrence is also reported from rotting timber of Drymis (canelo) and Berberis . Ph. baeosperma is often observed in association with Nematoloma frowardii (cf. photo, p. 87) both being effective decomposers of wood. Pileus up to 6 cm diam., at first convex with inrolled margin, becoming expanded, yellow to orange-brown with red-brown disc, glutinous, with squamules embedded in the slime. Lamellae argillaceous to yellow-brown. Stipe -8 x – 0.7 cm, cylindric, pale above, towards base concolorous with pileus, single or cespitose, white distinct rhizoids present. Flesh brown to orange-brown at base of stipe. Odor and taste unpleasant, sour. Spores 5-6.5 × 3-3.5 µm, ovoid, brown, smooth, germ pore distinct. Spore print brown. Pleurocystidia fusoid, metuloid membrane, often encrusted with yellow-brown crystals. (Gamundi, I. & E. Horak, 1995. “Fungi of the Andean-Patagonian forests.” Buenos Aires: Vazquez Mazzini Editores, pg. 94.)
