m California or Minnesota. The Centennial grounds cover 450acres, and extend from the foot ofGeorges Hill almost to the SchuylkillRiver, and north to Columbia Bridgeand Belmont jMansion. On the levelspace known as the Lansdowne Plateau,at the intersection of Elm and BelmontAvenues, the- principal exhibition build-ings are now being erected. The MainBuilding is a parallelogram 1880 feet inlength by 464 feet in width, and 70 feetin height, with central towers 120 feethigh. It covers, with its towers andprojections, an area of twenty-one and ahalf acres. It is of iron and glass, andshows in the interior one grand hallseventy feet in height, with a centralpavilion rising to the height of 96 feet.A central avenue 120 feet wide runs thewhole length of the building, and thereare two side aisles of the same lengthand 100 feet in width. These are in-tersected by three transepts, or crossavenues, of like width, thus dividing theplan into nine open spaces free from PHILADELPHIA AND ITS ENVIRONS.
