Français : En 1511, Pedro Navarro fait construire sur un des îlots au large, le Penon, un bastion circulaire doté de canons et situé à 300 mètres du port. Kher-Eddine arrache le Penon aux espagnols en 1529, fait joindre les îlots au port et bâtit ainsi une jetée afin de protéger la ville et le port. Le pouls de la ville sous la régence d'Alger se mesurait dans la darse puisque c'est là que se préparaient les expéditions des redoutables corsaires qui firent d'Alger une cité imprenable et qu'étaient débarqués prises, marchandises et prisonniers. Le Bordj El Fanar, agrémenté plus tard par le phare, a été édifié entre 1541 et 1544 par Hassan Pacha qui installa également les premières batteries. Les différents bâtiments militaires et autres forts aménagés progressivement ont façonné l'Amirauté, qui est aujourd'hui le commandement des forces navales.
