On 13 February 1869, military settlers, their family members, and the missionary John Whiteley, were killed when a Ngāti Maniapoto war party sacked the redoubt at Pukearuhe (White Cliffs) in northern Taranaki. The isolated redoubt blocked the path from Mokau to Taranaki, where Titokowaru and his followers were fighting against government forces. But the area itself was relatively quiet. Indeed, when Wesleyan missionary John Whiteley approached Pukearuhe on horseback during one of his regular visits, he was probably unaware of what had happened. He was seen by the war party and warned to stay away, but according to some accounts Whiteley refused. The Coroner’s Inquest found that Whiteley was shot five times and received several tomahawk blows. As nzhistory.net.nz notes, the colonial government put New Plymouth on a war footing. But there were no further attacks and the scare soon passed. In July 1869, John’s wife, Mary Ann Whiteley, petitioned parliament for financial support to help with the loss. In recognition of the services Whiteley had rendered, the government passed an act of Parliament in September 1869 which provided an annual payment of £100 for her, and after her death, for her unmarried daughter, Hannah Whiteley.
