GOVERNOR 31 MR. ROOSEVELTS neighbors are fond oftelling a story which they attribute toKermit, who, when he was a little fellow, as thestory goes, rushed into the house one day andexclaimed: Father, come on out in the yard and see some-thing awfully funny. I am busy; what is it son ? inquired Mr. Roose-velt. Kermit was insistent about the curious thinguntil finally his father said: Well, has it got a tail? Why, replied the boy, the darn thing is alltail! Kermit had seen a snake, for the first time. Mr. Roosevelt was very much interested inlocal educational matters. I was at one time presi-dent of the Oyster Bay Board of Education, andearlier a trustee, when the new High School build-ing was erected. One day Mr. Roosevelt sent for me and asked ifthere was anything he could do to advance the in-terests of the Oyster Bay School. He was told thathe was expected to lay the corner stone of the newschool building and deliver an address. He seemed 32 THEODORE ROOSEVELT immensely pleased, and
