though to some extent a fleshy organ, projecting beyondthe bone, is nevertheless in its shape and proportions determined far moreby the skull than is usually believed. Much of the profile is underlaidby bone, and after building up the points Nw, Nr, Ns and Ow there ispractically but one possible way to complete it. The width at the bridgeis also given by the bone, and that at the nostrils is indicated by the outeredges of the nasal (piriform) fossa, that conspicuous opening that marksthe nose of the skull. These edges about coincide with the outer edges ofthe nostrils, outside of which (laterally) there comes only the thicknessof the nasal wings. With the mouth the data are at present rather meager, but somethingcan be gathered from a study of the living in respect to the relations be-tween the parts of the lips and mouth and the teeth.
