ian period. It is carved with the figure of aking or warrior, slaying a monster with his dagger, somewhatafter the manner of the sculptures at Persepolis. The work-ing out of the design, in my judgment, shows too much origi-nality to be a mere later imitation of this motive, and there isno evidence to show that the seal is a forgery. I am sup-ported in my view that it belongs to Achsemenian times byother scholars who have seen it, among them Dr. WilliamHayes Ward, of New York, an authority on seals and cylinders. The last day of my stay at Tabriz, which I should gladlyhave prolonged in order to enjoy the hospitality extended frommany sides, was spent in making visits among friends in the lit was still famed as a seat of Tabriz a fragment of an Ancient Magism in the tenth century of our Persian cuneiform inscription, but era, according to Ibn Haukal, tr. Text Appearing After Image:
Safar awaiting Directions AN ACHyEMENIAN SEAL 55 European section, which forms a part of the Armenian quarterof the town. A final tour of the bazaars had also to be madeto secure a stock of provisions to carry on the road, and anextra supply of warm clothing had to be purchased, for thecold was still intense. The evening was passed at a dinnerparty given by my host and hostess, with a final good-by toAmerican and European friends. At the eleventh hour, when the dinner was over (and it wasliterally eleven oclock), I learned that the Armenian servantwhom I had engaged, and to whom I had paid part of hismonths wages in advance, had decided not to go on thejourney. This placed me in a great predicament: the horseshad been hired and preparations made for an early start in themorning, so that postponement even for a day meant a seriouschange in my plans. A ray of light, however, shone throughthe darkness. I bethought myself of a young Persian, namedSafar Adilbeg, a convert from Mohammedanis
