s onthe palm. CHAPTER VI. THE MERCURIAN, OR ARTISTIC HAND. Not many authorities on the study of Palmistryclassify the Mercurian and Artistic Hand as one.(Plate V.) Some writers go so far as to try to leave theimpression with the reader that there is but little, ifany, relation existing between astrology and palm-istry. To the student, to the delver in archaeologysuch statements have no weight; they only elicit sym-pathy for the person, with so little learning, who wouldpresume to prepare a work on the subject. Accord-ing to Grecian mythology, which is from two wordsmeaning fable and discourse, Mercury was an artistin his way. He was the confidant and ambassador ofthe gods. He was the god of eloquence, the patron ofmerchants, thieves and robbers, travelers and shep-herds. He was popular with all classes, and a friend to noneexcept when it would further his own comfort or pleas-ure.
