Summary[edit]
DescriptionPeck neststraw, Stylocline psilocarphoides (32719270866).jpg |
Peck neststraw, Stylocline psilocarphoides, California, White Mountains, Gilbert Pass, Deep Springs Valley drainage, elevation 1740 m (5705 ft). Scarcely resembling its family namesake, this highly reduced, desert-adapted, rayless member of the Sunflower Family produces separate male and female flowers within each wool-encased head. Cross-pollination between heads is likely very rare, even on the same plant. Originally described only from southeastern Oregon, discovery and recognition of this species in California deserts in the mid 1980s initiated the study that eventually became my dissertation on the genus Stylocline in 1992. Truly plants that only a botanist could love. |
