Summary[edit]

Description
English: Patriots Memorial is located in front of McCarty-Little Hall at the Naval War College, Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island. The memorial is dedicated to the three students and ten alumni of the Naval War College who perished in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on The Pentagon. The Naval War College Foundation raised money for the memorial through private donations. It was dedicated in 2002 and contained a piece of limestone removed from the damaged portion of The Pentagon.

The three Washington D.C.-based Naval War College students were:

  • Ms. Angela Houtz, 27, of LaPlata, Maryland
  • Lieutenant Jonas Panik, U.S. Navy, 26, of Mingoville, Pennsylvania
  • Commander Dan Shanower, U.S. Navy, 40, of Naperville, Illinois

The seven alumni were:

  • Captain Gerald F. DeConto, U.S. Navy, 44, of Sandwich, Massachusetts
  • Lieutenant Commander Robert R. Elseth, U.S. Navy, 37, of Vestal, New York
  • Captain Lawrence D. Getzfred, U.S. Navy, 57, of Elgin, Nebraska
  • Commander Patrick J. Murphy, U.S. Navy, 38, of Flossmoor, Illinois
  • Captain Jack Punches, U.S. Navy (ret), 51, of Clifton, Virginia
  • Commander Robert A. Schlegel, U.S. Navy, 38, of Gray, Maine
  • Major Kip Taylor, U.S. Army, 38, of McLean, Virginia
