The news was no proof of generosity. The Siouxwere the great warriors of the West. They knewvery well that whoever formed an alliance with theFrench would obtain firearms; and firearms meantvictory against all other tribes. The news set theCrees by the ears. Warriors hastened from the foreststo defend the fort. The next day came the eldersof the Sioux in pomp. They were preceded by theyoung braves bearing bows and arrows and buffalo-skin shields on which were drawn figures portrayingvictories. Their hair was turned up in a stiff crest

Behind came the elders,with medicine-bags of rattlesnake skin streaming fromtheir shoulders and long strings of bears claws hang-ing from neck and wrist. They were dressed inbuckskin, garnished with porcupine quills, and woremoccasins of buffiilo hide, with the hair dangling fromthe heel. In the belt of each was a skull-cracker — asort of sling stone with a long handle — and a war-hatchet. Each elder carried a peace pipe set withprecious stones, and stuck in the stem were the quillsof the war eagle to represent enemies slain. Womenslaves followed, loaded with skins tor the elderstents. A great fire had been kindled inside the court ofthe Cree stockades. Round the pavilion the Siouxelders seated themselves. First, they solemnly smokedthe calumet ot peace.
