– was employed in Alaska by the US federal government as a postal clerk for the Railway Mail Service during the early part of the 20th century, and he traveled the route from Valdez to Unalaska onboard a wood hulled mailboat delivering mail to the coastal communities; he was also an amateur photographer.

Owned by the Alaska Steamship Company, the MARIPOSA sustained damage on a rock ledge at the upper end of Fitzhugh Sound. She was refloated by the Esquimalt salvage steamer SALVOR, towed south and drydocked at the Seattle Construction and Drydock Co. on November 15. The passengers were rescued within two hours and landed at Ketchikan.
