The guestscrowded the big main ballroom, overflowed into the Astor Galleries,the Myrtle Room, the Waldorf Apartments, and the Rose Room, andeven filled the Green Room and main foyer. So great was the throngthat the hotel management had to detail large numbers of men toguide guests to proper places. General Pershing, in receiving in person the thanks of Congressa few days later, presented a manly and attractive figure, seem-ingly unconscious of the eminence he had won as a soldier. Hismanner was so simple that it should have disarmed any criticswho affected to see in him a champion of militarism. With hiswork well done in the field, he seemed now an average Americanin his point of view; a man of the people, and as much a democratas Champ Clark who in a speech claimed him as a sample of the*sort of man Missouri grows when in her most prodigal moods.

In September, 1918, this regiment captured 250 machine-guns and 400 prisoners 376 PROLONGED CONTROVERSY OVER THE TREATY Pershings genial good nature and sense of humor came to thesurface when he stood there the cynosure of all eyes at a jointsession of Congress, the galleries crowded. The remarks he made,while they had a certain eloquence because of their sincerity, weregenerous in giving credit to Americans of all classes and conditionswho had played their part in the war, at home as well as overthere. In what he said of the army he had led there was a touch-ing spirit of affection and loyalty. Vainglory and boastfulnesswere foreign to this stalwart soldier.
