Summary
[edit]DescriptionParasitoid, braconid wasp laying egg through the bark of an oak log.jpg |
English: The female parasitoid wasp uses its long ovipositor to penetrate beneath the bark of an appropriate tree species, to locate the larva of an appropriate host (e.g. a beetle larva), and to deposit an egg next to that larva for her own larva to feed on as it grows and develops. The ovipositor in this wasp is as long as her body, but much of it is inserted into the tree log and not visible in this image. |

Three of these female parasitoid wasps were discovered on the same oak log in Boston, MA. The log was a 20 cm wide, apparently healthy limb that had been cut (date uncertain) from a tall tree (~1.2 meters DBH). The image was captured in low light late in the day, with the wasp backlit by all natural light.
