A rare view of the rail car ferry Shenango No. 1, and a view of the earliest Huletts. Shenango No. 1 burned and sank 3/11/1904 at Conneaut. Shenango No. 1 1895-1904 Wooden Great Lakes crosslake railroad carferry Built at Toledo OH by Craig Shipbuilding Co., Hull 68 Launched Aug 5, 1895 300’ LOA, 283’ LBP, 53’ beam, 19’ depth 1 deck, coal-fired boilers, 2 fore and aft compound engines, 2200 IHP Enrolled at Toledo OH Aug 14, 1895 (#2) 282.6 x 53.0 x 19.4, 1941.90 GT, 1320.50 NT US 116688 to: Craig Shipbuilding Co., Toledo OH (home port Toledo OH) Entered service for United States & Ontario Steam Navigation Co., Conneaut OH, a subsidiary of the Pittsburgh, Shenango & Lake Erie Railroad Co. Sold 1903 to Marquette & Bessemer Dock & Navigation Co., Conneaut OH (home port to Conneaut OH) Burned March 11, 1904 off Conneaut OH, Lake Erie. Caught in the ice in January outside the entrance to the harbor, enroute from Port Stanley ON for Conneaut carrying eleven empty coal cars, banked fires and waited for a thaw to get free. Caught fire on March 11, just as the ice was finally starting to break up. The deck burned through and the cars fell into the hold below, sinking the vessel. One life lost.
