Reassortment events leading to past pandemics (Using information from Neumann et al, 2009)

Arrow – indicates contribution of at least one RNA segment to the new strain Duck – avian influenza strain responsible for outbreak Big man – Large outbreak/pandemic Small man – seasonal influenza Freezer – used to represent the interrupted transmission between the 1950s and the outbreak of “Red flu” in 1977

NB. The coloured of the RNA segments represents their origin within the pool of avian viruses, and not necessarily their antigenicity.
