DETAIL CONSTRUCTION OF A LOCKThe great tube, later covered by concrete, carries the water for filling the chamber dolph, on Margarita Island, there are eight mortarsof the new type, two 14-inch guns and two 6-inchguns. That armament will protect the MargaritaIsland side of the entrance and it also controls thewaters to the south. On the Toro Point side atFort Sherman we have eight mortars, two 14-inchguns, and two 6-inch guns. There are in additiontwo 6-inch guns provided at Manzanillo Point, cityof Colon. In my opinion this armament is entirelyadequate for the defense of the Atlantic side . It is apparent, therefore, that the unfortifiedIsland of Taboga is the one questionable point inour Pacific line of defense. It is wholly probablethat steps will be taken to erect such defenses aswill make the seizure of this island impracticableto any enemy. Plans for the landward defenses of the coast fortshad not been determined upon at the time of pub-lication of this book. Necessary no doubt
