The average Panamanian farmer will neverincur the scriptural curse laid upon them that layfield luito field. He farms just enough for his dailyneeds, no more. The ambition that leads ournorthern farmer to always covet the lands on theother side of his boundary fence does not operate inPanama. One reason is, of course, the aggressive-ness of the jungle. Stubborn to clear away, it isdetermined in its efforts to regain the land fromwhich it has been ousted. Such a thing as allowinga field to lie fallow for two or three years is unknownin Panama. There would be no field visible for thenew jungle growth. Agriculture therefore is conducted in a small wayonly, except for the great corporations that have justbegun the exploitation of Panama.
