To one who had never seen a tropical jungle itmight seem strange that a little road, less thanfifty miles in length, should have cost very nearly$140,000 per mile; more especially when therehad been no heavy grading, no tunneling, norock cutting of any importance; and a summitlevel of only 262 feet above the sea. Withoutthe least suspicion of extravagance or dishonesty,how could the total expense have been so enor-mous? But the real wonder was that the road had beenbuilt at all.
