Description

This building, owned by New York University, is leased out to Japanese restaurants and grocers.

This particular eatery, with the street address of 8 Astor Place, is Pan-Ya (パン屋 or パン家, Japanese for "Bread Place"). But to many people who frequented the area over the years, 8 Astor Place was home to Around the Clock, a diner that indeed stayed open all day and all night. It was the place to hang out for New York University students, either after cramming for exams or before/after an evening of fun. I myself have some fond memories of the place. Around the Clock closed sometime in 2009, and it is one New York City memory I will sorely miss.

And of course, the fact that I have such memories at all (not to mention similar memories from the Upper West Side, Columbia University, and elsewhere) means that New York City is not merely a destination, but a hometown of sorts for me. I only lived here for a few years, and I was certainly neither born nor raised here, but it often feels like I am a native.
